Gary's Greengrocery

Gary Wickford of "Gary's Greengrocery" is  the direct link between the citizens of Bridbury and the farmers in the surrounding countryside. It is him who visits the farmers growing vegetables and fruit in his cart and who brings their products to the town. There have been proposals to organise the buying on a centralised basis through some sort of auction, but for the time being too few people support this idea and Gary is totally against it!

He delivers overripe fruit to Bobby Taylor of the "St. George's Pub" , which Bobby uses to distil the most sumptuous fruit liquors in the cellars under the pub. And anything not used by Bobby is collected by a tradesman once a week who sells it in the slums of London, where the requirements are a lot less stringent. In this way everyone is happy. Gary himself is a rather quiet introverted man. This doesn’t make him all that fit to deal with customers and this is the reason why, when Gary is off buying or delivering fruit, his wife Suzy works in the shop.

She cleans the vegetables, sorts out everything that comes in according to size, fixes the prices and always manages to remain friendly to all her customers. This is hard work! Luckily Jessica Barnet, the eldest daughter of Jaimy and Lucy Barnet of the bookshop is willing to help her out in the green grocers in the afternoons. Steven Evans, the husband of Jeanet of the hat shop, happily assists Gary with the lifting and carrying, for a few shillings he lifts the heavy crates and boxes into the cart. And neither man thinks there is anything better than driving through the autumnal woods, humming around
