It’s a busy life, that of fisherman. Pierre en Laurent Avernes get up everyday in the summer, Sundays too, at four o’clock. They untie their small fishing boat in silence and head out to sea. Still silent they draw on their pipes throughout the morning until it gets light. Then they haul in the nets and sail back. Without looking at each other they clean the fish, lay them in ice or salt and bring them to Chareauville sur Mer’s fishmongers. Here they place the crates in the counter and write out the price tickets. Then Pierre stands behind the counter and Laurent walks to the harbour to clean the boat and mend the nets ready for the next day.
They have been doing this for years. If there is something badly wrong with the boat, Laurent calls in Lucien Chantiers of "Chantiers Navals". If he needs something, he shambles along to "Cerele Nautic Honfleur" belonging to George Honfleur. In the evening he returns to the shop and while Pierre scrubs the floor, Laurent takes the money they have earned to the bank of Philippe de Moissy, who watches the brothers’ capital growing little by little.
After this, every evening, both brothers go to restaurant "Deauville" belonging to Anne Chailly to eat the same meal everyday: "marmite de pêcheurs". Some people suspect that it is not easy for Laurent to see that sign "Chez Pierre" everyday above the shop, but he has never given the slightest indication of this. It is said that he wants to do something else, that maybe he will buy André Draveil’s watermill, but in public Laurent has shown no interest in this whatsoever. It’s probably all just talk. That happens in a small town.
