Anton aus Tirol

The Neuendorf Bauernhof is located under the slope of the Humpferdell, the two thousand metre Alpine mountain, which dominates the Schneewald valley. In the summer, as soon as the snow has melted, farmer Anton takes his cows out of the stalls and up into the Alpine meadows. The cows are then wild with joy, Anton’s children Greta, Agnes and Peter love watching the animals go running off into the meadow to savour the fresh spring grass.

The Anton’s "Alm Abtrieb" is renowned throughout the valley for the "Bergkäse" made from the milk by Anton’s wife, Elise. This year Elise even won the golden "Käsemandl", a great honour that reflects on the whole valley. The samplers drove into the village in a black Daimler and stayed at the hotel belonging to Annemarie Britz, which is always fully booked in the winter with skiers. Anton and Elise are as proud as peacocks of their award and the café/restaurant "Stab Aldo", belonging to Aldo Ramsbeck praises the "Neuendorfer Bergkäse", which can be ordered there, in his menu.

But the world becomes much smaller for the Neuendorfers when the skiers race over the Alpine meadows. Anton chops wood that he has collected in the autumn and shovels hay inside for the cattle. Otherwise he enquires at Heinrich Hagelkost’s weather station, to find out whether or not the weather is expected to improve. If he’s lucky, wood worker Marty Friedenau can use him to work in the grove, although he always does the fine carving himself. Elise uses the winter to make honey and distil "Krautinger" in the cellar, a stiff gin made out of white turnips, which is especially popular among the skiers as a drink to warm them up.
