Nena Fahnster is a wonderful young lady, who was an orphan before the age of twenty and saw in her inheritance the chance to start a ski school and shop in the parental house. The technical developments of the skis, the introduction of aluminium as the material from which they are made and the invention of the safety fastening meant that visitors always wanted to hire the newest skis with which they wanted to improve their technique.
The first ski instructor she employed was a handsome boy from a neighbouring village and within a year she married him, this was Conrad Birkholz. Their first child was born within three months. With skiing becoming more popular each year, they now need more and more instructors, especially as Nena and Conrad need all their time for the shop. So Marty Friedenau, one of Schneewald,s wood workers who is unemployed in the winter, was only too pleased to become a ski instructor.
Jost Britz too, Annemarie Britz’s son, from the hotel, whizzes down the slopes with beginners and finally there is Casper, a friendly student from Innsbruck, who Nena believes to be in love with Gertrud, Jost’s sister. And the future is settled. The three children of farmer Anton Neuendorf are also growing up fast and will soon be ready to become ski instructors. The ski shop is established in a beautiful building with large balconies full of flowers. A fresco has been painted on the side of the building, so that skiers are easily able to find their home base. And Heinrich Hagelkorst’s weather station has hung a baro/thermometer above the door, so that before they hire their skis, skiers know what is awaiting them above. In the near future negotiations for the purchase of a real piste machine will start. Then the skiing can begin in earnest!
