Developments in the weather are not only important for farmer Anton Neuendorf, they are also decisive for the skiers. When it is windy and snowy up in the mountains the sportsmen and women would rather remain down in the village. This means even more turnover for Bernhard and Maria Blumberg from "Bernhard's Backstube", but less for "Stab Aldo", the café run by Aldo Ramsbeck, who misses the après ski, not to mention the local ski school and ski shop belonging to Nena Birkholz and her husband Conrad! It’s not surprising that Heinrich Hagelkorst’s forecasts are followed by everyone with Argus’ eyes.
It is he who goes up in the lift first each morning, to check his equipment and his own measuring station located at the top of the lift. Here he measures the wind according to the scale of Beaufort, assesses the clouds and the chance of snow storms. He estimates the chance of showers and looks to see whether globe lightening is possible. He measures condensation and air pressure and reads the barometer. He records all his findings in his almanac, which he then takes down again and compares with the measurements taken by his colleagues in different regions.
He makes a map of this, forecasts the amount of snowfall, the chance of storms, of snowdrifts and of course of thaw. Because once the fall wind starts to blow again and the warm air starts melting the snow in the valley, the skiers will leave and the inhabitants of Schneewald will be alone again for the whole spring. Until the summer, when walkers will replace the skiers. Then Annemarie Britz from the hotel will be keen to know how warm it is going to be, because then she can start her preparations for welcoming the new tourists.
